Paul Smith has spent his career working with wood. His professional skill comes from the intricate and complex work of antique wooden boat restoration. Paul graduated first in his class from Washington County Vocational Technical Institute in their boat building program in 1983. After interning with Riverside Boat Company in Newcastle, Maine, and upon graduation, he was hired by the boat yard, leaving there in July of 2004 to form Cathedral Woodworking. Prior to forming the furniture company, he built finely crafted custom furniture recreationally for family and friends.
In founding Cathedral Woodworking, Paul brought his extensive knowledge of wood and wood performance, and his eye for design to the fledgling company. Since then, he has been creating custom furniture that is long lasting and delightful to see and use. Each design takes into consideration the function of the piece, the setting in which it will be used, and how the woods will respond to the environmental changes of the setting. Believing that furniture is meant to be both functional and beautiful, Paul often designs with graceful curves and clean lines, always striving to meet the desires of his clients. He personally handcrafts each piece, employing construction techniques and finishes that endure through years of use.

What People are Saying...
"Paul created the Chancel Screen in our church in memory of my father. We were delighted with his sensitivity when working with us during the planning and design process and with his attention to detail in building a screen that the whole congregation appreciates but which has special meaning to our family." - Brian H., Maine
