The Craftsman

Paul M. Smith has 23 years of woodworking experience. His professional skill comes from the intricate and complex work of antique wooden boat repair. Prior to forming Cathedral Woodworking, Paul built custom furniture vocationally for family and friends.

2008 Best in Show for Marketing Excellence
Paul received this award at the Fine Furnishings and Craft Show in Milwaukee, WI. This award is based on the quality of the body of work, how the work is exhibited and the personal interaction between the craftsman and prospective client, with the intent to sell. It takes into consideration the promotional materials and website of the company. Please click here for more information.

With his extensive knowledge of wood and wood performance, his eye for design and his fine craftsmanship, Paul creates custom furniture that is affordable, and delightful to see and use. Each design takes into consideration the function of the piece, the setting in which it will be used, and how the woods will respond to the environmental changes of the setting.

Paul believes that furniture is meant to be functional as well as beautiful. He designs with graceful curves and clean lines and employs construction techniques and finishes that endure through years of use.

He graduated first in his class from Washington County Vocational Technical College in their boat building program in 1983. After interning with Riverside Boat Company in Newcastle, Paul was hired by the boat yard immediately after graduation. He left Riverside Boat Company to start Cathedral Woodworking in July of 2004.
